Re: A-Rod makes more than the entire Marlins team

OK...using your stats, I ranked all 8 of the 1Bs in RBI, AVG, HRs and OBP. Then I averaged those rankings to find the best overall hitter. Shook out like this (rankings don't correspond to orger of categories above):
    1-Clark (2,2,2,3)(2.22 overall)
    2-Olerud (3,1,5,2)(2.75 overall)
    3-(3 way tie)
    Gallaraga (1,8,8,1)(4.50 overall)
    Grace (8,4,2,4)(4.50 overall)
    Mattingly (4,7,6,1)(4.50 overall)
    6-Hernandez (8,2,4,7)(5.22 overall)
    7-Joyner (6,6,7,5)(5.75 overall)
    8-Gurrerro (5,5,6,8)(6.00 overall)
So, IMO Clark and Olerud show to be the best overall hitters..BUT Clark didn't win a batting title (Olerud, Hernandez, Mattingly, and Galaraga did)
Defensively, ya gotta go on gold gloves cuz it's based on fielding percentage...so rankings there go:
    1-Hernandez (11 Gold Gloves)
    2-Mattingly (9 Gold Gloves)
    3-Grace (4 Gold Gloves)
    4-Olerud (3 Gold Gloves)
    5-Galaraga (2 Gold Gloves)
6-3 way tie with NO Gold Gloves
    Clark
    Gurrerro
    Joyner
To rank them overall average the defensive ranking and the offensive ranking
    1-Mattingly (3,2)(2.5 overall)
    2-Grace (3,3)(3 overall)(tie)
    Olerud (2,4)(3 overall)(tie)
    4-Clark (1,6)(3.5 overall)(tie)
    Hernandez (6,1)(3.5 overall)
    6-Gallaraga (3,5)(4 overall)
    7-Joyner (7,6)(6.5 overall)
    8-Gurrerro (8,6)(7 overall)
IMO, that is a pretty accurate ranking of those 8 players...and as I said before, Mattingly was the best overall player.
...And if you ain't down with that, I got 2 words for ya....

Re: A-Rod makes more than the entire Marlins team

hitting carries more weight than defense does

the way to do it is add in gold gloves with offensive stats and assign a number to that too....this way its just 5 seperate categories......you cant use 4 offensive categories and 1 defensive stat but have that one carry the same weight as 4

    thats idiotic

be sure to add freddie mcgriff to the equation when you recalculate

I don't like using Gold Glove awards because thats too much of a popularity vote. Too hsee how good of a fielder a guy is, I would rather see his putout/assist to error ratio.

actually bill buckner was one of the best all around players until chronic ankle injuries hampered him both in the field and on the bases

there was a time when he was a base stealer too.......but despite injuries beating him up on the bases and in the field the guy was still a solid hitter

Go ahead and leave out that his fielding is the only reason the Mets won the 86 title.

fielding percentage would be a good variable to use

because despite having multiple good fielders.....only one will get a GG award

Re: A-Rod makes more than the entire Marlins team

The majority of the time, the Gold Glove will go to the highest percentage fielder.
But here's McGriff batting (1,8,1,5)(3.75)(3rd)....defensively 6th...overll 4.5 (7th). He was a consistant slugger...but as far as avg. and fielding he was average to adequate.
